The fund-raising is part of the company's road safety initiative, Think Pedestrian Campaign, which aims to heighten the awareness of drivers around the vulnerability of pedestrians, and to raise funds to improve road safety. In line with that aim, Eqstra hosted a golf day and a gala dinner for its strategic stakeholders at the Serengeti Golf Estate to raise funds for the initiative.
The Think Pedestrian Campaign is a partnership between EFML, the Department of Transport, the Nelson Mandela Centre for Memory and the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign, to combat fatalities on South African roads.
"We are very serious about giving back to the community through reducing the number of road fatalities," said Eqstra CEO Jacqui Carr. "This is the reason that we are working closely with the National Department of Transport to address pedestrian safety. As Eqstra we are encouraged to have received tremendous support from our customers and suppliers."
Thandi Moya, director of road safety at the Department of Transport, decried the unacceptably high number of pedestrian fatalities on South African roads. "Nearly half of the deaths that occur on South African roads are of pedestrians." Moya suggested that one of the key strategies that should be implanted to counteract the scourge of pedestrian fatalities is the development of road infrastructure to cater for the specific needs of pedestrians.
