40 injured in jobs stampede in Bloemfontein
At least 40 people have been injured after a stampede at the Transnet office's in Bloemfontein after the company invited people to apply for jobs at the group's depots in Bloemfontein. The company had vacancies for 30 people.
According to Business Report the company had expected to get about 4 000 applications for the 30 jobs and it had arranged for two halls, accommodating 400 people each, to allow them to conduct the 30-minute interviews with each candidate.
The company estimated that it would take up to four hours to complete the interviews.
By 7am about 5 000 people were queuing outside the halls and in total about 10 000 people turned up in the hope of getting a job. The first 400 people started to write the assessment when the crowd outside is believed to have panicked, causing the stampede as they tried to force their way into the halls.
