Free Digital PhotosSARS spokesman, Adrian Lackay said that more than 3.8m South Africans had filed their 2013 income tax return and about 2m of these had used the SARS e-filing service while 1.8m had filed them at a SARS branch.
Almost two million tax refunds with a combined value of R12.8bn have already been paid out by SARS," said Lackay.
The deadline for the submission of tax returns by non-provisional taxpayers (individuals who earn an income from an employer) is 22 November.
Lackay said the annual tax season served as a key determinant of people's levels of compliance with the country's laws. He warned that criminals used the tax season to take advantage of unsuspecting taxpayers.
"Taxpayers must beware of e-mails that ask for personal, tax, banking and e-filing details will never be sent to individual taxpayers by SARS. We never ask for information like this via an e-mail," he said.
Lackay said SARS would also not request banking details over the phone, or via SMS.
