Information sessions for SA students wanting to study in the US
As US universities prepare for a return to campus life post Covid-19, the US Consulate General in Cape Town and US Missions throughout South Africa are working to ensure students are well prepared with accurate, comprehensive, and current information about opportunities to study at accredited post-secondary institutions in the United States.
Over 2,000 South African students are currently pursuing higher education in the United States. They are studying at the best universities in the world, focusing on topics as diverse as molecular biology and economics to mechanical engineering, occupational therapy, and philosophy.
"After they complete their studies, South African students and academics bring all that knowledge to the Cape. Perhaps even more important than their education, they bring back their connections to US institutions and partners. Connections that they are using to create jobs in South Africa," says Consul General Virginia Blaser.
Throughout the month of July, the US Consulate General in Cape Town will be hosting a number of virtual sessions for interested South African students with US university representatives as part of the EducationUSA speakers programme.
The live sessions can be found on the US Consulate General's Facebook page and will include:
- 2 July at 4pm University of Alabama - US University Applications
- 9 July 9 at 4pm Amherst College - Five Steps to Study in the US
- 16 July 4pm Columbia University - Selecting the Right US University
- 23 July at 4pm Texas University Consortium Panel - Study in Texas
- 30 July at 4pm Maryland Consortium Panel - Study in Maryland
In addition to providing guidance and resources, the US Mission throughout South Africa offer the Opportunity Funds Programme. This programme covers the costs of US university applications, standardised tests, and travel costs for highly qualified and deserving students who are likely to be admitted to US universities, but are in need of financial assistance.
