Chanelle Hoorne is a South African singer, song-writer, pianist and composer. Hoorne began her career back in 2009 when she collaborated with several local DJs and producers before joining The Fly Chix reality show in 2012. Sher then landed a role in the short film Two Choices which got nominated at the Durban Film Festival.
Hoorne hosts a music show on Soweto TV called Kasi Vibes and is currently working on her long awaited album in Cape Town. I caught up with Hoorne to find out what music means to her and more…
What does music mean to you?
Music has always been an escape for me. An escape from being misunderstood for being different. It’s a place where I can feel fearlessly vulnerable, yet completely in control. Music is something I live for.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?
Performing live has a sense of magical energy, especially when the crowd sings along to your songs – this feeling is priceless.
What drives you – ego go or humility?
It’s a 50/50 take for me. I’m driven by ego, because self-esteem, self-respect and self-love is key to a healthy mind. I’m driven by humility, because I was raised to be a humble individual and kind to people.
It’s your round, what are we drinking?
Yoh, I’m actually so over alcohol but uhmmmm, let’s have a patron shooter. Lol.
What would be your dream gig to do?
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.
What makes you stand out?
My exotic looks and warm energy literally makes me look like a walking flame, lol. But urrrr, I try and keep it real with you at all times. That’s kinda rare.
If you were not a musician, what would you be?
I’d be a private investigator solving extreme murder scenes. OR… a full-time mom.
Pick five words to describe yourself
Optimistic, funny, Godly, creative, driven.
What is your favourite fashion garment?
My gold Casio watch.
Give us some real proper slang and what it means.
Awe – this is a general greeting among friends or could be a word you use when agreeing to something.
Dala what you must – Do what you gotta do.
Blom – This means wait, as in hold up. Or can be used in a phrase to express that you are chilling with friends.
What do you complain about most often?
The heat, or being hungry… again.
What is your fear?
Cockroaches.
Where would you like to be right now?
In Bora Bora with my whole family.
