A dazzling line up of South African guitar legends will join Rubain for guest performances and, as always, share in conversations and stories. The programme will feature Errol Dyers, Allou April, Cameron Ward and Julius Schultz.
"Each of these musicians has played an inspirational role in the shaping of my music, so it's an honour to be sharing the stage with them," said Rubain. "Errol Dyers is like a musical father to me. Julius Schultz was my first introduction to gospel jazz. Cameron Ward has played with my band and with the likes of Hugh Masekela, while Allou April has always been an inspiration and it is a joy to be on stage with him. It's also something special when you are lucky enough to count these artists as your friends."
Rubain returns to the Baxter stage hot off the success of Intimate Nights Chapter 2 with Don Vino. The pair has been touring this year with Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and songwriter Kirk Whalum, who performed with Whitney Houston for more than seven years and soloed in her single I Will Always Love You.
Errol Dyers has performed, recorded and toured locally and internationally with many great artists such as the late Basil Coetzee, Winston Mankunku, Abdullah Ibrahim, Robbie Jansen and McCoy Mrubata. He has released a number of albums and his long list of accolades includes a 2008 Legend of the Arts (Music) Award from the Western Cape Government's Cultural Affairs & Sports Department.
Allou April started playing with garage bands from the tender age of 16 and has grown to become a significant voice within the contemporary African and jazz music landscape. He has developed his own unique style of guitar playing that reflects the many eclectic genres within the South African music environment and has released a number of albums.
Four-time SAMA award-winning artist Jimmy Dludlu identified Cameron Ward's tremendous talent and bought him his first guitar. Ward's meteoric rise from Lotus River on the Cape Flats to the world stages of the Lugano Festival (Switzerland), The North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), The Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada), the Back to Black Jazz Fest (London and Brazil) and the Joy of Jazz is testament to his musical genius. He has played with the likes of Judith Sephuma; Sipho 'Hotstix'Mabuse; Yvonne Chaka Chaka; PJ Powers; Vusi Mashlasela and Hugh Masekela, with whom he still plays.
Julius Scholtz started playing guitar at the early age of 12. He has opened for gospel stars such as Donnie McClurkin; Fred Hammond; Ken Reynolds and Israel Houghton. He performed at the TD Jakes MegaFest, has been seen on Afro Café and has released three albums: 'Expression'; 'Replay'; and 'Christmas Album' (an African Christmas).
