Womb Tide to open at National Arts Festival Arena

A new production of Womb Tide, will open as part of the National Arts Festival Arena programme, between 22 to 25 June, 2010. It will also come to Cape Town's Baxter Theatre in December.

Written by Baxter Theatre Centre Director, Lara Foot, and developed in collaboration with Leila Henriques, Brian Webber, and Joss Levine, Womb Tide was first performed in 1996.

Award-winning visual theatre company, from the hip: khulumakahle (FTH:K) is re-creating the production, using their fresh and arresting signature style of non-verbal theatre.

"We are delighted to be presenting this new production of Womb Tide and are honoured to have such a stellar group of collaborators on board," said director Rob Murray.

New co-conspirators

"Two new co-conspirators will join FTH:K company members Liezl de Kock and Emilie Starke on stage. They are Daniel Buckland, whose numerous credits include the recent production of Master Harold and the Boys, directed by James Ngcobo at the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square, and a year with the prestigious Cirque du Soleil.

"Rising Capetonian talent Kim Kerfoot completes the cast and brings his wide range of theatre skills to the production. Kerfoot has worked with companies such as Magnet Theatre and TheatreSports; created original short works which were presented at Out the Box festival and has performed in Quiet Emergency as part of the Spier Infecting the City festival. He has also worked as a puppeteer on the award-winning online satirical broadcast, ZANEWS."

An unconventional love story

At its heart, Womb Tide is an unconventional love story. Told through the memory of a child, Womb Tide is at once deeply moving, funny, dark, heartbreaking, and ultimately redemptive. Set in mid-late 20th-century South Africa, it follows an eccentric and somewhat dysfunctional family through a story of love, loss and hope, and paints an impressionistic portrait of the complexities of family life.

Womb Tide will be performed at the Loerie Hangar at the National Arts Festival Arena programme on 22 June at 12 noon; 23 June at 3pm and 9pm; on 24 June at 6pm and 25 June at 3pm. Tickets cost R50. PG Language.

Womb Tide will also be performed from 8 November to 4 December 2010 at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town and as part of the Listen With Your Eyes festival of visual theatre presented in collaboration with the Market Theatre from 22 August - 27 September.
