From policy to implementation: what next for NHI?

When the Government released its Green Paper on National Health Insurance (NHI), it provided the industry with a broad roadmap to reach the destination of quality healthcare for all South Africans.

Now, two months down the road, the debate has begun to centre on finding ways to ensure effectively that the broad plan makes the transition from being a distant target to a successfully implemented system.

Metropolitan Health has brought together a panel of experts from the public and private sectors to take an in-depth look into what steps must be taken for the successful implementation of NHI.

The Engage Forum, part of a bi-annual series, will be held at The Pavilion, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, on 28 October. Entrance is free.

"We know that a pragmatic and inclusive implementation is the essential cornerstone for a successful NHI," says Kusile Mthunzi-Hairwadzi, corporate affairs executive at Metropolitan Health. "This forum provides a platform to discuss the critical areas that are vital for the successful roll-out of NHI in South Africa."

The line-up of speakers:

• Dr Aquina Thulare, technical advisor: national health insurance, Ministry of Health, South Africa, will discuss the status of implementing NHI in relation to the Department of Health's 10 point plan;

• Dr Mark Blecher, acting chief director: health and social development public finance, National Treasury, will take a close look at funding NHI: current allocations and sustainable future allocations, an economic tax analysis;

• Chris Klopper, chairman of the Independent Labour Caucus, will provide an employee perspective on the implementation of NHI; and

• Andee Deverell, senior manager: people insights and metrics, group human resources at Standard Bank will offer an employer's perspective of NHI - looking at the implications of issues such as affordability, employee choice and existing employee healthcare provision/medical scheme membership within the context of NHI implementation.

Investigative journalist, Bongani Bingwa, will facilitate the discussion.
