The compact roadster is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the Mercedes-Benz range, thanks to a number of unusual features, including a “vario-roof”, which turns the two-seater into a weatherproof coupé in a matter of seconds. Since its introduction on the Merc, this innovative roof technology has been adopted by many other makers of cabriolets and roadsters.
The current SLK was also a trendsetter with its “Airscarf” neck-level heating system.
Worldwide, Mercedes-Benz has produced a total of more than 460,000 SLK models since 1996.
“To further enhance the model range, a new sports package has been added as optional equipment across the SLK range (but not including the 55 AMG) from December 2007,” said Reandren Thulkanam, Mercedes Product Manager.
The new sports package is easily distinguished from the standard SLK model, with a number of eye-catching features such as the front headlamps with a partially painted cover frame, sports suspension, 17-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels and hub caps which are now adorned with the Mercedes-Benz star and laurel wreath.
The stylish AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid adds to the SLK's aggressive stance.
The interior features of the sports package option include red top-stitching on the black leather seats and door armrests and the seat belts can be ordered with either a red or black belt strap. The shift/selector lever is finished in black leather with leatherette bellows and red topstitching, as is the leather steering wheel. To further enhance the sporty look, the instrument cluster features illuminated red indicator needles.
Further luxury styling comes in the form of black velour mats with red edging, while the roof lining and rear-window frame are finished in stylish black.
All current high-spec safety and comfort features included in the SLK 350 and SLK 200 models are available with the sports package option.
The sports package option is priced at an additional R15,500 (including VAT) to the current retail price of R429,000 for the SLK 200 and R559,000 for the SLK 350.
