Randfontein's has quickest download speeds

According to Ookla's Net Index, reported in Beeld, the national broadband average speed is 3,82 megabytes per second (Mbps).

Randfontein is the fastest area in SA as far as broadband is concerned, with a download speed of 11,3Mbps, followed by Bryanston, Midrand and Randburg.

The results were determined with the help of local Internet users, who used Ookla's website and app to test their broadband speed.

Ookla tested 1,7m broadband users' speed 5,05 million times between 6 February and 7 March and used 451,472 of the tests to compile their index.

Only two of the country's fastest broadband areas fall outside Gauteng -- Secunda in Mpumalanga (5,72 Mbps) and Worcester in the Western Cape (3,84 Mbps).

Although broadband speed in Randfontein is faster than the national average, the broadband speed of 115 countries is faster than South Africa's.

Vilnius in Lithuania has a broadband speed of 49 Mbps, and HongKong a speed of 45,43 Mbps.
