Now in its eighth year, the Smart Young Mindz challenge for 2013 is to research, design and make a mechanism or system that can go green and will not use fossil fuel. The total value of prizes is over R400,000. Out of 7,000 entries into the competition this year, 15 finalist teams of 5 learners each progressed to the finals.
The teams will spend the morning on 30 October 2013 interacting with the judging panel and their peers during the expo, which will provide an opportunity for each 5-member team to explain and promote their respective models. The first, second and third team winners for 2013 will be announced on the day.
Smart Young Mindz is a CSI programme of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GDDA) in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), The Innovation Hub, a Gauteng Growth and Development Agency subsidiary and Dimension Data, which offers selected individuals from the competition a chance to participate in the company's Saturday School. Those learners who are accepted into the school could stand a chance of winning a fully funded tertiary education bursary.
