Sold-out Kaya FM 67km Relay set to celebrate Mandela Day
The inaugural Kaya FM 67km Relay for Mandela Day has sold out thanks to a phenomenal response from corporates and the public who wish to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela.
The target of 670 teams running 67km in honour of the 67 years that Mandela gave in service to South Africa was not only reached but exceeded and many corporates really came to the party entering numerous teams. Entries received until the closing date totalled more than 1000 teams with over 11,000 keen runners all ready to do their bit for those less fortunate.
The 1.67km Family Fun Run has also been over-subscribed and due to the route and maintaining safety, event organisers have had to cap entries at 1000 with no more entries available, not even on race day, for both the team relay and the Family Fun Run.
A festive tribute to benefit the underprivileged
In a wonderful tribute to Madiba and everything he represents, 12,000 runners will be turning up in support of the event equipped with a desire to do something healthy and positive on Mandela Day. Proceeds from the relay are going to the Mandela Container Library project which converts old shipping containers into beautiful, well-equipped libraries for disadvantaged primary schools around the country.
The relay will start at 8am and the Family Fun Run will start at 8.15am. Please note that alcohol is only allowed in the Corporate Hospitality Village on purchase of a Hospitality Package. No alcohol will be sold at the venue and no cooler boxes, picnic baskets, bottles, firearms, coal or gas braais are permitted. Also no branding is allowed in the unreserved picnic areas.
Kaya FM would like to thank all corporates and the public for their incredible response and enthusiasm - the inaugural 2013 Relay for Mandela Day is destined to be a great day out. To those that have not entered, do not despair as a bigger event is already in the pipeline for next year. The race is scheduled for Sunday, 14 July 2013 at Waterfall Polo Estate in Sunninghill, Gauteng and although thousands of people are expected to converge in the area for the day's festivities, event organisers will make every effort to lessen any impact on local residents so that the day will be a successful, fun-filled event for everyone.
All team captains are reminded that they must collect their team race packs on Wednesday, 10 July between 10am and 6pm from Kaya House, 195 Jan Smuts Ave, Parktown North. For all race details, parking information and any other details, go to www.kayafm.co.za.
