September marks Heritage Month
This theme throws the spotlight on the idealism and heroism of those who fought to liberate the country from colonialism and apartheid. Their memories will be evoked, their sacrifices acknowledged.
Historical narratives of the struggle will be told through exhibitions, poetry, dance, songs, oral history and site visits to heritage sites invoking remembrance and promoting national identity.
Heritage Month recognises different aspects of South African culture: our arts and crafts, our historical inheritance, our languages, our literature, the food we eat as well as popular memory.
It provides opportunities to foster cultural pride and instil a shared identity through events undertaken throughout the month.
South Africa produces a remarkable range of crafts. The various types of crafts reflect South Africa's diverse communities as well as crafters' lifestyles, cultural groups and different backgrounds.
