2013 Florence Nightingale Award winners

International Nurses' Day, celebrated on 12 May, acknowledges nurses and their significant contribution to our communities. The third annual Florence Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing is a Bio-Oil initiative that aims to elevate the tireless, often unrecognised work being done by South Africa's nurses.

Jacqui Caley, Training & Congresses Manager of Bio-Oil says: "When we launched our first Awards in 2011 we were overwhelmed by the positive response from participating hospitals and since then the campaign has grown enormously. This year we're pleased to announce another six deserving nurses, each recognised for their unwavering dedication. These nurses have gone above and beyond the call of duty, and have been singled out by their peers for their commitment to caring for others."

The 2013 winners of the Florence Nightingale Awards are:

  • Nurse Amber Rockman from Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital in the Western Cape
  • Sister Carine Jonker from Netcare Garden City Hospital for the JHB/Mpumalanga region
  • Sister Eugenia Myeza from Addington Hospital in KwaZulu Natal
  • Nurse Josephine Mashini from Netcare Akasia Hospital for the Pretoria/North region
  • Sister Carol West, from Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic in the Free State
  • Sister Annamarie Crause from Netcare Greenacres Hospital in the Eastern Cape

The six winners will each receive a cash prize of R5000. This year Bio-Oil has pledged an extra R10 per nomination to the hospital in each region with the most entries. This money will be used to upgrade nurses' facilities, with almost R27,000 to be awarded across the regions.

Caley continues: "Nurses spend long hours on their feet caring for others. The donations towards the nurses' facilities will hopefully help make their well-deserved breaks a little bit more comfortable."
