HASA elects new board

The Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA) - which represents about 80% of acute beds in South African private hospitals - elected its board comprising representatives from across the private hospital sector, at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Cape Town on Wednesday, 6 November 2013.

Melanie Da Costa, who was retained as chairperson for another term, said: "It is my pleasure to welcome the new board members, all of whom bring different sets of skills that will be crucial in advancing our goals to ensure quality healthcare in South Africa."

"The new board comes at an important time for HASA as we strive to work closely with government and other players in the healthcare sector to work towards fulfilling government's vision of sustainable, quality healthcare - that is accessible to all."

Elected to the board were representatives from HASA's main members - Life Healthcare, Netcare, Mediclinic and the National Hospital Network (NHN).

Board members elected include:

  1. Jonathan Lowick, Group Strategy and Development Executive, Life Healthcare
  2. Steve Taylor, General Manager Coastal Region, Life Healthcare
  3. Nkaki Matlala, Director: Government and Industry Affairs, Mediclinic
  4. Biren Valodia, Chief Marketing Officer, Mediclinic
  5. Jacques du Plessis, Managing Director, Hospitals, Netcare
  6. Melanie Da Costa, Director: Strategy and Health, Netcare
  7. Otto Wypkema , CEO, National Hospital Network
  8. Anton Roussouw, Founder, Life Path Health
  9. Treasurer: Tienie van den Berg, Manager, Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital, National Hospital Network

"The private hospital sector is a national asset that contributes significantly to sustainability and integration of healthcare in this country," said Da Costa. "We continue to look for innovative ways to extract efficiencies and deliver world-class healthcare to patients."
