Small beer kicks big butts
The low-key Zulu Blonde beer, brewed in Eshowe by Richard Chennells, beat 50 international beer brands tested in the first two weeks of the Wetherspoon Real Ale Festival in London.
The 19-day festival pits 46 local ale brands against one another, with space for four overseas competitors, of which Zulu Blonde was one. The Zululand beer is topping the charts, but could lose out to another competitor before the festival ends on 25 April.
Whatever the result, Chennells says, the exposure is “priceless”.
“I've been bumbling along here making beer at the little brewery at my hotel in Eshowe. And the last thing I thought in this world was to have my beer in 750 pubs across the UK and being voted number one.”
Distributors have expressed interest in selling the beer overseas during the World Cup.
