This is the second year running that The Lyric Theatre at the casino will be hosting this charity show featuring many of the country's top dancers and dance companies. All proceeds from the performance at The Lyric will be used in the fight against cervical cancer. The show will also serve as a platform to create awareness around cervical cancer and how it can be prevented.
Dance for a Cure, is a community-driven and volunteer-based organisation committed to fighting gynecological cancer. The show is a rare opportunity to support a worthy cause while watching some of South Africa's top dancers across a range of styles and disciplines tell a tale of hope, fear, suffering, courage, rebirth and love.
Confirmed participants who will dance and sing for the greater good include the Tribhangi Dance Theatre, Moving into Dance, Tap Talk Rhythm Company, KMAD, Teresa Morena, Jeanne Swart and Gary Golding, Salome Sechele, Kitty Phetla, Martin Schonberg's dancers, Tracey-Lee Oliver and Michelle Veenemans.
The show tells a story about a woman's battle with cervical cancer and brings the message of hope that it can now be prevented through the development of a new vaccine. Contemporary, neo classical, classical, ballet, tap, opera, African and Indian dance and music fuse in this world-class performance.
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide in women under 45 and the third leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide after breast and lung cancer. In South Africa, it is the most common cause of cancer deaths among women.
A vaccine has been developed to protect against the two types of HPV responsible for most cervical cancer. It can potentially reduce the risk and incidence of cervical cancer significantly in countries such as South Africa, where there is limited screening.
The show takes place on 14 August at 7:30pm. Tickets are priced from R140 and are available at Computicket or The Lyric Theatre Box office on +27 (0) 11 248 5000 or log onto www.goldreefcitycasino.co.za.
