Special focus on media freedom

The ANC's anti-media campaign and its unexpected brilliance
[Branko Brkic] Over the past couple of months, many editors, journalists and analysts have been surprised - indeed, taken aback - by the effectiveness of the ANC's march towards what would effectively be criminalising the free media. Here's how the political party is doing it. Read more >>

Why do we need to speak up for free speech?
[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] Not since the days of apartheid has freedom of speech been under such threat in South Africa. For easy-to-understand explanations of and further readings and documents concerning the Protection of Information (POI) Bill, the proposed state-appointed media appeals tribunal, and the jackboot arrest and detention of Sunday Times investigative reporter Mzilikazi wa Afrika and why this affects all of us and our right to free speech, read on. We're not the apartheid regime, Zuma tells media
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] President Jacob Zuma has reacted angrily to suggestions that the creation of a media appeals tribunal is an attempt by the ruling party to control and bulldoze the media using the tactics of apartheid regime. Writing in ANC Today, the party's online weekly newsletter, the sexagenarian head of state said to suggest that the ANC and its government could have any similarities to the apartheid regime is not only preposterous, but also disingenuous and an unbearable insult. Media freedom: things fall apart
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Like in Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart, South Africa's media freedom is slowly but surely falling apart, wiping out 15 years of freedom of expression and open criticism gained through the democratic platform. President Jacob Zuma, the man branded by The Citizen newspaper's today editorial as an enemy of media freedom, this week put the last nail in the coffin to start the 'burial ceremony' of what ANC insiders call the 'enemies of the revolution'. Good leadership recognises freedom of expression - Sexwale
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As South Africa is battling to shake off the evil spirits of media repression, ANC senior member and cabinet minister Tokyo Sexwale has launched a bombshell, saying that good leadership should recognise freedom of expression, and mostly the freedom of media.
