Lucky you if you're only getting back to work this week. Although we've been having fun going through and publishing all the excellent 'trends for 2008' pieces commissioned from some of our top local thinkers in new media and branding/marketing. In all trends predictions there's a certain trepidation and tacit warning about rising costs and our economy, but a building excitement about potential for brands in Africa and 2010. There is no doubt the environment is a big player in all future marketing campaigns and marketers need to keep this in mind, as well as the fact that rising costs will change consumer behaviour to a certain extent. Consumers will expect more value if they have to pay more. We looked at retail, brand, Africa, marketing, digital, media convergence and PR trends last week and this week Yellowwood Future Architects, for example, look at general consumer trends for this year and Interbrand Sampson venture into Africa brand trends – brilliant stuff! The irony is that as I was subbing Yellowwood's comment about power failures… my power went off no thanks to Eskom! I'm so lucky to have a laptop with good battery life! So a happy and ‘illuminated' new year again to those of our readers and clients only returning to work now, we hope 2008 is everything you wish it to be.

'Power' to the people! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com. All marketing news to: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcome on our blog: http://blog.bizcommunity.com.

Marketing
The trend for 2008: PowerJacking!
Bread price fixing. Telecoms price cartels. Negligent aircraft maintenance. Government succession battles. Power cuts. Rising interest rates, linked to irresponsible credit provision. Incidents of ministerial drunkenness whilst hospitalised… That was 2007. In their top trend predictions for 2008, Yellowwood Future Architects look at what all this means for 2008.

Tap your markets with the power of effective promotion
[Chris Olivier] There are numerous companies that have grown their brands into some of the best known in the world; and they are often held up as examples of how to undertake advertising, marketing, promotion and brand building. Granted, some of these companies have deeper pockets than most; but more importantly, they understand and appreciate the value of performing these activities.

Consumer confidence dips globally
Rising oil prices, the spread of the sub-prime credit issue in international markets and the slowdown in the US economy are all taking their toll on the confidence of the world's consumers. According to the latest Global Consumer Confidence Study conducted by The Nielsen Company, more than a quarter of global consumers expect a global recession in 2008, resulting in a dip in confidence in 21 of the 48 markets that Nielsen surveyed.

The future of marketing is secure
[Prof Roger Sinclair] I recently finished teaching my 2007 honours course at Wits University in Johannesburg. As has been case for more than 10 years it is based on the work of Kevin Lane Keller who, young as he is, in my view is the father of brand equity theory and practice in the world. This was arguably one of the brightest classes yet.

Tom Peters returns to SA in March
Tom Peters, one of the world's leading business strategists, will appear live and in person in Johannesburg on March 12, 2008. The event, presented by Global Leaders, is entitled ‘Excellence, Always!' and will take place at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

A Q&A with Tom Peters
Global management and leadership guru Tom Peters is back in South Africa this year on the Global Leaders ticket in March. If you haven't heard him live yet, try. He is inspirational. In this Q&A he talks about Africa and Asia, the next 10 years in business… and the difference between men and women in the boardroom.

Welcome to the Click Society: 2008 mega trends
[Naseem Javed] We are simply not alone any longer, anywhere or anytime... not even in the most private rooms and quiet spaces that we so dearly cherish. All that beautiful décor and openness that we think is filled with fresh air is actually jam packed with zillions of invisible wireless messages, electronic signals, streaming videos and all kinds of pulses that are fast forwarding our cyber-society of today.

Trend to integrating green issues into loyalty programmes
The field is wide open for retailers to incorporate eco-friendly measures into their loyalty offerings and the next two to three years will see retailers around the globe giving their loyalty programmes a decidedly green hue. These are some of the findings of the Retail Rewards Programmes Around the World 2007 report, published recently by Razor's Edge Business Intelligence. The report analyses the points-based loyalty programmes operated by 27 retailers in six countries.

The Celebrity Marketer
[Marc Ashton] Maybe I am just slow to catch on, but one thing has become very apparent to me over the last six months. There is a new job title coming to the fore and businesses seem to be investing more and more in the ‘celebrity marketer'.

Change, challenges, opportunities ahead in 2008
[Neil van der Weele] Draftfcb South Africa group CEO, Neil van der Weele, lists several of the events and trends he believes will impact the marketing and advertising industry in 2008, including transformation, the National Credit Act and new media.

The future is largely free...
[Dion Chang] From free stuff to permission based marketing, people power, techno stress, the redundancy of human contact and the need for reflective thought… It's all there in trend watcher, Dion Chang's eight trends for 2008.

Investing in corporate communications pays dividends - Chris Moerdyk
Here's something to hand out to people in your company who think they're good communicators. Contrary to popular belief, mostly by MD's and CEO's, the vast majority of people who think they know how to communicate, actually haven't a clue. Ironic isn't it - that the very thing so fundamental to business is something that human beings are so singularly useless at. Communication. More specifically, inter-personal communication.

Strategic or just plain clever? How to get 18% return on a mailer - BEHP
When Johnson & Johnson presented BEHP with the following brief, the result was over 1 000 entries from a mailing of 6 000: We needed to promote the new Sinutab range to doctors – without the manpower or a field force.

Branding        Idea Engineers will grow your brand, reputation & business.

Brand trends for Africa
[Christopher Koller] Interbrand Sampson Africa has released eight strategic brand trends, focusing on Africa as the continent becomes increasingly important on the global stage as brands extend their footprint into Africa.

Make your brand the cause in 2008
[Gary Harwood] In fashion, the industry drives the trends. In the branding arena, consumers dictate direction. And as consumers become increasingly savvy, demanding and discerning, brands have to respond quicker and more effectively than ever before. Design is pivotal. Consumers need to believe what they are seeing – transparency and integrity are crucial.

African brand directions for 2008
[Sean McCoy] ‘Hamba Kahle' could be the defining phrase for brand-building in Africa in the coming years. If we tread carefully, learn from experiences and be nimble on our feet, branding in Africa will offer vast growth potential.

Retail brand directions for 2008
[Graham Leigh] People want to shop – what are the trends that are driving how they shop, why they shop and where they shop? Of great interest is the evolution of the South African retail branding landscape considering the momentum of technology and our growing globalisation. Will retail brands push the branding envelope? Will the market demand that the envelope be pushed?

How 'post-TV' are we?
[Patrick Carmody] Contemporary discussions around branding tell us that we live in a post mass-media age characterised by a cynical consumer, over-traded product categories and a proliferation of brand contact points. How relevant is all of this new media hype to marketers in South Africa?

Bye bye brand? - Brand Alive
[Giles Shepherd] When it was announced that the CEO of Northern Rock Bank in the UK had not only resigned, had stated that he would be leaving with immediate effect, but indeed had already vacated his post, those who understand the basic principles of brands were quietly acknowledging this obvious and inevitable step in the process of a brand decline. And the same people will be slapping money down on the table as to when – not if – the brand Nationwide says ‘cheerio'. They are not psychics or prophets of doom, but can simply see the obvious consequences of a human, not just a business, reality.

Design

Don't worry, be happy
“Summer 2009 will be our happiest season ever,” so says internationally renowned lifestyle and design trend forecaster Li Edelkoort. Edelkoort, in association with VISI magazine, is returning to South Africa for a Cape Town and Johannesburg presentation, taking place at the beginning of March 2008.

Communication goes ‘underground' in Kenya
[Robin Parker] The current turmoil in Kenya is redolent of its history. In spite of an ineffective guerrilla war waged largely on white farmers in the Aberdare's and an equally barbaric response from the British to the Mau-Mau rebellion, independence passed generally quietly into the hands of Jogo Kenyatta. But it has been far from plain sailing since then.

No matter what, you can always be assured that one or more services that you subscribe to will send you a letter or e-mail advising you that, despite their greatest efforts (hmmm...), they have no alternative but to increase their fees for the new year... just like last year, the year before that, and the year before that one.

Five new year resolutions for the PRO
[Robynn Burls] If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got… Perhaps you've heard that one before? Now that another year is already here, perhaps it's a good time to learn (or recap) a few important things that will help you drop the habits that keep giving you the same results and make 2008 your most successful public relations year yet.

PR is only one part of integrated communications
[Jane Weaver] Gone are the days of public relations being a stand alone tool as the method of communicating an organisation's message to its target audience. In order to survive in the media noise of today, companies must consider implementing an integrated communications strategy. Such a strategy needs to encompass all elements of the traditional or classical marketing mix in addition to other, more innovative tactics.
