| | | No Comment | “Journalists will disappear if they don't make the transition to the digital world.” That was a scary comment by 24.com's Arie Rossouw at Highway Africa last week. By implication this means communicators and any brands not making use of new media tools – because many of your consumers are, particularly your current/future consumers, the youth. Highway Africa and the Digital Citizen Indaba, which both took place at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, is the largest annual gathering of journalists in Africa. The focus was on new media and the digital tools to empower and enable reporting across Africa. It's one of the most exciting and scariest times to be in media with the cornucopia of tools available to us across multi-platforms, from mobile to blogs, to social media sites, wikis, etc – and available at the same time to all our readers aka ‘citizen journalists' who are using them more effectively than some of the mainstream and traditional media to disseminate news. It's a time of opportunity and challenge. Brand guru Scott Bedbury, back in South Africa, will also be sharing some of his thoughts on this and global branding challenges tomorrow in a one-day seminar, Tuesday 18 September. We'll keep you updated on our breaking news blog: http://blog.bizcommunity.com. Our intrepid production and sales team have also put their love of sport into action with our new fun sports blog for the rugby world cup: http://sport.bizcommunity.com.

| | Marketing | | The art and science of marketing
Is marketing an art or a science? Scott Bedbury, former chief marketing officer of Nike and Starbucks, argues that it is both. Here are his thoughts in advance of his full day presentation in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 18 September 2007, organised by Global Leaders.
Solutions to service delivery crisis? [Jerry Schuitema] Ask two or more people who has the most power, Robert Mugabe or Nelson Mandela, and you are bound to have a mixed response. This is due to a failure to distinguish between power and control. True power is earned. It is that state where people willingly and passionately follow a leader on the basis of their own individual convictions. It is also based on something more fundamental: the axiom that ultimately our true value lies in our capacity to make a contribution to others.
The power of the ABC
After a run at the Thompson Gallery in Johannesburg, the 26 Letters project, a literacy against violence initiative, moves on to exhibit at the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Conference in Johannesburg in October. Vodacom, MTN to test 2010 ambush marketing rules [Chris Moerdyk] The big question, following the Advertising Standards Authority's quite rightly ordering of MTN to withdraw an "ambush marketing" advert that infringed Vodacom's proprietary rights over the name Bafana Bafana, is what will happen in 2010?
Social media: finally the where… [Louise Marsland] The divide between those that understand social media and those that don't is so wide, one despairs that even the implementation of broadband won't enable the rest to ever catch up. It's concerning when at all these industry events we are still talking about why we should be blogging; the regulation thereof; online censorship; whether media owners should join the social media revolution; whether blogs are relevant; whether journalists should blog; and how to convince your clients they need to be online… The process has moved so past these basic debates. The early adopters are already doing it all and making brand capital and revenue out of the process.
