Expect a rough ride at Joburg licensing department
Motorists expecting to renew their drivers' licences in Johannesburg are in for a rough ride as all nine licensing departments around the city were closed yesterday after staff downed tools.

SA Municipal Workers' Union's legal officer, Jack Mokalapa, said the stoppage was because jobs at the department had been externally advertised, with staff saying they should have been advertised internally first.
"There are workers who qualify for those positions internally and clearly the aim of those officials to advertise externally is to recruit people they know," said Mokalapa.
"We have had instances in which people are taken from other departments without any experience in licensing and are given senior positions," he said.
Joburg Metro Police Department spokesman Edna Mamonyane said JMPD was not responsible for recruitment. This, she said, was done centrally by the City of Joburg.
Late yesterday an emergency meeting was held to find a solution.
