2019 Parkview Charity Christmas Market sets R1.5m target

In 2018, the Parkview Charity Christmas Market raised R1.2m for the beneficiaries of Nicarela Charity. This year, the two-day event, taking place at George Hay Park, aims to raise R1.5m, hosting 10,000 people shopping for gifts.

Nicarela Charity is a non-governmental organisation whose purpose is to raise funds to support several outreach projects, organising events and markets with volunteers, the proceeds from which are given to various charities that are active in the community, helping those that need to get through a crisis.

Organisations include The Frida Hartley Shelter which, at their fullest capacity per month, can accommodate 40 women and children. It costs them around R49.32 per person, per day to shelter the individuals. Many women who first come to the shelter have very few possessions or resources. Adult and children’s clothes, blankets, nappies, toiletries, sanitary products and cleaning agents are some of the donated products that the shelter requires on a monthly basis.

Considering the shocking statistics of gender-based violence and child abuse in South Africa, more women and children need the support of shelters like Frida Hartley to help rebuild their lives and self-esteem.

“You coming to the market is you helping another woman or child get all the help they need to get them back on their feet. It surely is difficult sometimes to donate to charities; the Parkview Charity Christmas market is just the perfect way for you to have a good time while at the same time being part of something larger than yourself,” says Cheryl Hlabane, operations manager at Frida Hartley Shelter.
