Transnet's wage deal with workers

Transport utility Transnet has concluded a two-year wage agreement for bargaining unit employees‚ it said on Wednesday (15 May).

This follows negotiations with its recognised unions Satawu and Utatu-Sarhwu.

This is the first time in Transnet's recent history that it has concluded a two-year wage agreement that covers all employees that fall within the bargaining unit.

"We have reached a settlement of an 8.5% across-the-board increase in basic pensionable pay for this financial year and 9% for the next year. The terms of the agreement were finalised at the Transnet bargaining council in Johannesburg on last week‚" it said.

"This agreement will go a long way towards strengthening our relations with our most important stakeholders - our colleagues - and‚ we believe‚ will have a significant impact on morale and productivity. Crucially‚ this settlement will enable us to focus on achieving our operational goals for the year." Transnet added.

It said it had made a "generous" wage deal, which accommodates the rising cost of living and provides a real increase in earnings. "

The increase, backdated to April, will be paid from this month.
