I&J attempts to protect its European exports

Business Day says that South Africa's largest fishing company, Irvin & Johnson will, by 2015, submit records of its monthly catch to strict international monitoring bodies amid warnings that local fishing companies could be precluded from exporting hake to Europe from next week.

I&J says it has agreed to submit records to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) or the Southern Africa Sustainable Seafood Initiative by 2015.

Business Day reports that Tthe MSC says that South African fishing companies could lose their membership of the council because the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries had failed to monitor fish stocks in South African waters.

The department has assured South African fishing companies that the MSC accreditation is not at risk but this has been denied by MSC, according to Business Day
