Dali Tambo wants a museum near Nasrec
Two weeks ago his TV show People of the South was re-launched on SABC3.
Sowetan has also learnt that Tambo could become part of a project that would see a piece of land in the Nasrec area being turned into an integrated community development, including a residential area, a national monument and other tourist attractions like a hotel.
The department of public works has confirmed that in 2010 the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation, represented by Dali, made a request for the release of a portion of land at Farm Randskou for the development of a monument and a commercial site.
The land belongs to the department of public works.
The department, however, has also pointed out that the piece of land Tambo had requested had been earmarked by the Housing Development Agency for human settlement.
The agency's mandate is to identify possible human settlement areas, conduct a development feasibility study on the area, and then issue out tenders for possible developers.
Agency spokeswoman Kate Shand confirmed on Monday the piece of land had been earmarked for human settlement.
"A development feasibility study has been completed and submitted to the department."
Shand also said a project of the kind envisaged by Tambo "could be accommodated as part of integrated sustainable human settlements".
The department of arts and culture has also endorsed Tambo's initiative and confirmed there were plans to establish a museum on the piece of land.
The department of arts and culture said the museum will comprise life-size sculptures of individuals from all social strata who contributed to the establishment of democracy and the liberation of all South Africans.
