Redevelopment at Silverstar taking shape

Over the past few months redevelopment has been taking place at Silverstar, a Tsogo Sun property. The anticipated date for full completion of the work is scheduled and on track for September 2014.

"The new development incorporates a host of family entertainment facilities that will appeal to the residents of Joburg's West Rand," said Shane Collinson, director of operations and complex GM of Silverstar.

To achieve something for everyone, a variety of offerings had to be incorporated in the development. "We realised that our customers enjoy spending time outdoors and, to make full use of this the concept and our spectacular location, an outdoor square or public space is being introduced," he said.

When completed, the new-look Silverstar will boast a central village square with a large outdoor screen where Boktown matches will be screened as well as a bar and beer garden adjacent to the square. The beer garden opens up to a terrace for casual family dining. Here live bands will perform and outdoor barbeques will tantalise the taste buds.

An interactive environment

The new facilities create an interactive environment that supports entertainment as well as dining opportunities suited to all patrons, including families. One such highlight, which will take effect as early as January 2014, will be the opening of Billy G's - an upmarket buffet family restaurant that features a variety of hot and cold starters, main courses and desserts.

"The overall architectural concept of the development revolves around the creation of a mix of dining and lounge experiences, which are located in terraces, courtyards, pavilions and outdoor rooms. The design has been done to reinforce the international trend of cafe and bistro-style dining and the growing trend to dine alfresco," said Pierre van Wyk, architect and director of Northpoint.

Various alcoves along the square will provide informal seating and play opportunities for children. Fans of the musical fountain will be delighted to know that the beauty of the fountain is not all lost. "The fountain's size has been reduced, but it now offers an interactive feature to keep the children entertained," said Collinson.

The development is not simply about aesthetics, but creates a total experience for the family. "We are increasing the crèche area, including a gaming arcade, and will also have six cinemas and a 12-lane bowling alley all under one roof," enthused Collinson.

Major sporting events

Aside from their love for food, South Africans are also well known for their love of sport and, to this end, the big outdoor screen will show major sporting events including Silverstar's Boktown rugby screenings. "The screen forms part of the open square, which will feature a stage capable of accommodating music performers, fashion shows and even theatre productions for children," said Collinson.

The development brings Silverstar into the open air with an array of family-friendly leisure, entertainment and dining facilities to choose from. Additionally, the entire gaming floor and internal complex will be aesthetically refreshed in early 2014 to complement and bring together the theme of the redevelopment.

"Apart from these developments taking place for the benefit of our guests, we also hope that they will empower the community of the West Rand through job creation," Collinson concluded.
