Edgars is aiming to raise R300 000, which means that every child in the SOS Villages in Cape Town, Ennerdale, Mamelodi, Mthatha, Mathanjana, Nelspruit, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth, Qwa Qwa, Rustenburg and Sekhukhune will receive a complete party outfit.
"Shoppers are going to be making a positive difference to the lives of under-privileged children when they spend R600 or more. Our ability to give is being made possible through the giving of others, and is a defining feature of the Edgars holiday shopping experience," says Hugues Witvoet, the chief executive of the Edcon Department Stores Division. "In many households, children are the centre of festive celebrations. By making SOS Children's Villages South Africa the centre of our holiday story, we are sending a message of love and hope to the future of our country."
Following an initial financial contribution of R20 000, Edgars' role has increased significantly year-on-year. After sponsoring the casual clothing, as well as the bedding and linen required by all the villages in South Africa and the neighbouring states of Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland, the current commitment includes school uniforms to the value of R1 million a year. At the same time, Edgars' employees have embraced the charity, volunteering regularly at the SOS Children's Villages where they live. While they read to the children and help with schoolwork, they also arrange fun holiday activities, such as Christmas parties.
