Telkom's offering rattles competitors

Telkom's business offering - that provides a convergence of mobile and fixed-line services - has rattled other service providers in South Africa by undercutting rivals for mobile data and voice bundles along with smartphones and tablet computers.

According to an article published in The Citizen, Telkom is offering a range of tablet computers, including the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy and BlackBerry Playbook for prices ranging from R170 to R700 a month.

Telkom is also planning to launch an applications store to support the smartphone and tablet computers that it is offering. Telkom's Brian Armstrong says that the company is "waiting to see" how competitors such as Vodacom, MTN and Cell C react to the converged services.

However, Telkom reported a loss for its financial year this year mainly a result of the sharp decline in revenue because of increasing competition from mobile service providers.
