The appointment of the new Auditor General is for a period of seven years and was made on the recommendation of the National Assembly.

The Presidency said Makwetu, a Chartered Accountant by profession, had served as Deputy Auditor General for six years.

He matriculated from St John's College in Umtata in 1984. He has a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Accounting Science from the University of South Africa and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy from the University of Natal.

"President Zuma has congratulated the new Auditor General and wishes him well in his new role. The President has also thanked the former Auditor General, Mr Terence Nombembe for his efficient and effective service over the past few years," said the Presidency.
