Shock report on municipal incompetence
Just 13 of South Africa's 283 municipalities received a clean audit from the Auditor-General, according to Times Live, which says the poor performance continued despite warnings from the Auditor-General's office and its offer to formulate intervention strategies to curb the problems.
Auditor-General Terence Nombembe confirmed that in five provinces, namely Gauteng, North West, Free State, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape, not one municipality managed to achieve a clean audit, reports Times Live.
Nombembe's figures show that 53 municipalities or 18% received qualified audits, 55 received disclaimers for failing to supply supporting documentation, while seven failed to provide accurate financial statements, according to Times Live.
Shockingly 40 municipalities did not bother to submit their financial statements on time.
