No pay hike for 'poor' Zuma

President Jacob Zuma and other politicians earning more than R1m a year will not be getting a salary increase if the recommendations of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers are accepted.

Zuma earns R2.62m a year and his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe, R2.36m. Ministers earn about R2m a year and their deputies R1.65m.

The commission's recommendations will be submitted to Zuma for approval. Zuma's salary will have to be ratified by the National Assembly.

The recommendations also affect judges, magistrates, municipal councillors, members of provincial legislatures and traditional leaders.

One of the commissioners, Pearl Sithole, said the commission had taken into account consumer price inflation, employment market salary increases during the year and the economic and social environment along with previous recommendations from the commission.

Office bearers earning less than R500,000 a year will get a 7% salary increase while those earning over R500,000 a year will get 5%.

Officials earning between R800,000 and R1m will get 4% more.

The new salaries would be backdated to 1 April if approved by Zuma.
