The department, which provides financial support to all registered veterans and their dependents, says students and learners currently funded by the department will continue to receive financial support for the duration of their studies.

The decision not to accept new applications follows intense discussions and deliberations between the Department of Military Veterans, the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans, the South African National Military Veterans Association (SANMVA) and the advisory council, where it was decided that DMV pull back on new applications until an economically viable solution is found.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, is engaging her counterparts in the Department of Higher Education and Training, Basic Education and National Treasury in an effort to find sustainable solutions to the challenge.

“We appeal to everyone for patience, cooperation and understanding. The department is working around the clock to improve the situation.

“The department remains committed to providing education support to all qualifying military veterans and their dependents. All military veterans who have enquiries are encouraged to be in contact with the department,” department said in a statement.
