Highway round of BDO School Quiz goes to Kearsney College
In a closely fought contest, the four Grade 10/11 members of the winning team beat a team from Westville Boys High school to claim victory with a total of 97 points. Michael Lee, Jethro Strydom, Hlumela Mngomezulu, Daniel Phillips celebrated their win with the 15 teams who also took part in their round.
A total of 38 schools from Durban and Pietermaritzburg are taking part in the competition this year in four regional rounds. The top two teams of four Grade 10 or 11 learners from each round go through to the final round of the general knowledge quiz at Clifton College on 2 May.
They will compete for the title of quiz champions and the privilege of naming the disadvantaged school that will receive a donation of books to the value of R10,000 donated by independent, community-minded book store, Books & Books and Kip McGrath education and learner enrichment centres.
“The pressure is on as we gear up for the championship round of the competition,” said Sally Juckes, BDO audit and assurance partner, “We have seen excellent teamwork and good humour as the contestants have fought for first place and we have been most impressed with both their knowledge and their conduct throughout the competition.”
This is the eighth year that the quiz has been organised by the Durban office of audit, accounting and advisory firm, BDO.
The schools participating in the Highway round this year were Kearsney College, Thomas More College, Westville Boys High School, Westville Girls High School, Star College.
Last year, the winners from the Highway region were Westville Boys High School.
