14,000 teachers leave education department

More than 14,000 teachers left the department of basic education in the 2012/13 financial year, Minister Angie Motshekga said in a parliamentary reply.

"The reasons [for leaving the department] include death, ill-health and retirement," she said in reply to a question from the Congress of the People.

The total number for the year was 14,302, down from 14,988 in 2011/12. The lowest figure in the past five financial years was 11,903 teachers in 2008/08.

In the 2012/13 financial year, 6,272 qualified teachers resigned, 1,859 died, 394 left because of ill health, 5,417 retired, and 360 were dismissed.
