Comedy show gets Kuwaiti writer arrested

A Kuwaiti writer and director, Fajer al-Saeed has been arrested and accused of trying to overthrow the Gulf state's government because of what she had written and broadcast in her television comedy programme.

The Information Ministry complained about the broadcast and she was arrested and questioned by the public prosecutor before being released without bail according to her legal representative Faisal al-Enezi.

The prosecutor accused Saeed of attempting to overthrow the government, change the country's economic and social systems and demolish Kuwait's foundations of society using "illegal means".

Saeed has obviously denied the allegations and says the charges brought against her were "politically motivated".
The allegations were based on comment made in her show "Sotik Wisal" or "Your Voice has been Heard" that was broadcast in August by Scope, a satellite channel owned by Saeed.

The satellite station's director Talal al-Saeed, Fajer's brother and also a former member of parliament was also quizzed about the programme.
