Afrikaner racial identity explored at Cape Winelands Film Festival
A 48-minute documentary, Afrikaner Afrikaan, which explores the preoccupation with Afrikaner identity via the booming record sales in the Afrikaans music industry, will be screened at the Cape Winelands Film Festival, at the City Varsity Theatre, Kloof Street, Gardens, Cape Town on 24 March, 2010, at 8.30pm. The documentary will be in Afrikaans with English subtitles.
Set in a radio station, a conversation between three men forms the backdrop for Afrikaner Afrikaan. The documentary uses Afrikaans music as the vehicle to portray and explore Afrikaner identity and culture within a multicultural South African society. The three men are all involved in the music industry and belong to the minority group of Afrikaners, once the elite ruling class. They represent a microcosm of Afrikaans society through which the filmmaker explores the shifts that have been made from apartheid to post-apartheid. The preoccupation with Afrikaner identity is best evidenced in the booming record sales in the Afrikaans music industry, illustrating a hunger for Afrikaans music, specifically with a national/patriotic theme. A fine line is explored between racial identity and racial supremacy.
Featuring three well-known Afrikaans musicians and media personalities from opposing viewpoints: Sean Else from De la Rey fame; Johrne van Huyssteen from the band Ddisselblom and the controversial media personality Deon Maas. The music of Fokofpolisiekar, Ddisselblom, Bok van Blerk, Glaskas, Lianie May, Koos Kombuis is also featured.
Tickets available at the door.
