Scousers' good start
"The most important thing is to get the three points," Reds manager Rafael Benitez said.
I don't understand why the football media seems to “jump on the backs” of Liverpool when they struggle against a lower level team, and harp on about it for a few weeks. Manchester United lost to Burnley in the Premier League and that “media frenzy” only lasted as long as I can hold my breath. At least Liverpool won and got the three points.
No one, fan or player, knew what to expect from Debrecen - just like Burnley. Debrecen, playing for their first time in the Champions League, did well in slowing down the attack of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt.
As the match went on, Debrecen grew in confidence forcing a save out of Pepe Reina in the Liverpool goal. This was a wake-up call for the Reds resulting in Albert Riera taking a few shots at the Hungarians' goal, only to be saved by Vukasin Poleksic.
Liverpool finally opened the scoring just before the end of the first half. Torres receiving a through ball from Benayoun, dodged his marker on the edge of the Debrecen box, before ripping a shot towards goal. Debrecen goalkeeper Poleksic managed to push the ball away, but into the path of Dirk Kuyt who slotted in the first and only goal of the match.
