Cape Philharmonic presents Celebrity Symphony Season
The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra's latest season features a range of celebrity performers. The five concerts include works by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Schubert, Schumann, and two Rachmaninov piano concertos for the price of one.
Thursday 6 June (8pm, City Hall)
Conducted by Bernhard Gueller and featuring South African pianist Francois du Toit as soloist, this performance includes:
- "Kikimora", Op. 63 by Liadov
- Piano Concerto No. 1 by Tchaikovsky
- Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky
Sunday 9 June (8pm, Artscape)
Conducted by Theodore Kuchar and featuring world-renowned violinist Sarah Chang as soloist, this performance includes:
- Overture to The Italian Girl in Algiers by Rossini
- Symphony No. 4 in A major (Italian) by Mendelssohn
- Finlandia by Sibelius
- Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 by Sibelius
Thursday 13 June (8pm, City Hall)
Conducted by Bernhard Gueller and featuring Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón Valencia (gold medallist at the 2012 International Music Competition), this performance includes:
- Overture "Le roi d'Ys" by Lalo
- Cello Concerto by Friedrich Gulda
- Symphony No. 9 in C major ("The Great") by Schubert
Thursday 20 June (8pm, City Hall)
Conducted by Yasuo Shinozaki and featuring Russian pianist Vassily Primakov as soloist, this performance includes:
- Four Sea Interludes, Op. 33a by Britten
- Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 by Schumann
- Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 by Brahms
Thursday 27 June (8pm, City Hall)
Conducted by Yasuo Shinozaki and featuring Italian pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi (winner of the prestigious Van Cliburn Piano Competition), this performance includes:
- Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky
- Piano Concerto No. 1 in F# Minor, Op. 1 by Rachmaninov
- Firebird Suite by Stravinsky
- Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 by Rachmaninov
