Ballet on the big screen

What's the greatest ballet of all time? A tough question, no doubt. Fortunately for Cape Town residents, there's no need to choose just one. That's because The Fugard Bioscope's World Opera and Ballet Season will be screening over a dozen performances over the next 12 months.
Ballet on the big screen

First up is Giselle, which will be rescreened due to popular demand on Sunday, 15 July, 2012. From its first performance in 1841, it is considered one of the most influential of all romantic ballets and is one of The Royal Ballet's most popular works.

The full schedule is as follows:

• 15 July - Giselle (2pm and 6pm)
• 12 August - Don Giovanni (2pm and 6pm)
• 19 August - The Flames of Paris (2pm and 6pm)
• 9 September - Esmeralda (2pm and 6pm)
• 16 September - Aida (2pm and 6pm)
• 13 and 14 October - Romeo and Juliet (4pm)
• 10 and 11 November - Les Troyens (4pm)
• 17 and 18 November - Carmen (4pm)
• 9 and 16 December - The Nutcracker (2pm and 6pm)
• 13 January 2013 - Carmen (2pm and 6pm)
• 20 January - Don Quixote (2pm and 6pm)
• 17 February - Faust (2pm and 6pm)
• 17 March - The Sleeping Beauty (2pm and 6pm)
• 21 April - Rigoletto (2pm and 6pm)
• 26 May - La Fille Mal Gardee (2pm and 6pm)

All screenings are presented in full high definition with 5.1 digital surround sound. Tickets are available from Computicket or by calling The Fugard Box Office on +27 (0)21 461 4554.
