South African comedians, fans of comedians, anybody and everybody who chooses to see the lighter side of life, people who enjoy the best comedy talent that South Africa has to offer, will all remember The Underground. It's a place where everybody met to have a chuckle and a beer, and you will be excited to know that a similar venture is in the making; similar, but different, because now we can all pretend that we are grand theatre-goers who watch comedy in style.
Let's start at the beginning. Whacked and CineCenter Killarney unveiled one of the coolest and productive concepts to develop local comedy talent on Wednesday, 29 February, 2012. They call it CineComedy.
The general idea is to gather an audience in a 270-seater cinema that has its own stage, lighting and drapes, and to present and showcase material of some of our most talented and up-and-coming comedians. This is something new, something fresh and a bold collaboration between Whacked and CineCenter.
Allowing some of the best-known names in South African Comedy to draw crowds, the not so well known, but also deserving talent also gets the chance to showcase their material. It is also a great opportunity for writers and comedians to form partnerships. It sounds like a win-win situation.
CineComedy will take place every Monday night in CineCenter, Killarney Mall at 8pm. The first official CineComedy takes place on Monday, 26 March. This event's line-up showcases: MC Joey Rasdien, Donovan Goliath, Warren Robertson, Melt Sieberhagen, Robby Collins, Mpho "Popps" Modikoane, and John Vlismas.
Tickets are R50. You can book your tickets by visiting the CineCenter website or call the CineComedy Call Centre on 0861 246300. Alternatively, tickets can also be bought from the box office at the venue on the night.
See you there.
