Tapeworms larvae are harmful to humans
Adult tapeworms can live in the gut for years without doing much harm, but the larvae they produce can be harmful.
They create cysts that grow for years and can rupture, which can be fatal for the host. New research has shown that humans and tapeworms are evolutionary very similar.
In many ways, these parasites are similar to cancer tumours, so some cancer therapies could work at treating complications caused by the worms.
