BA to provide bicycle drop-off service for Cape Argus Cycle Tour

British Airways (operated by Comair) and kulula.com will once again provide an exclusive bicycle drop-off service for customers to transport their bicycles safely and hassle free to and from Cape Town.

A payment of R300 per bicycle per one-way flight will apply. To make payment customers will need to call the British Airways Contact Centre on 0860 I FLY BA (0860 4 359 22) or +27 (0)11 921 0222, or the kulula contact centre on 0861 KULULA (585852) depending on which airline they are travelling with.

Following payment, customers will receive a handling fee receipt together with comprehensive procedures to ensure that their bicycles are ready for transport. Drop-off and collection areas will also be included in the procedures, as well as maps to these areas.

Customers can drop off their bicycles between 24 February and 6 March 2014, to be transported to Cape Town. Proof of identification (ID book, passport or driver's licence), the handling fee receipt and flight booking will need to be presented when dropping off your bicycle.

Customers wishing to collect their bicycles between 24 February and 4 March will need to collect them from BidAir Cargo at Cape Town International Airport. From 5 March, bicycles will be collectable from the multi-storey Parkade 1 at Cape Town International Airport.

British Airways and kulula will make every effort to ensure that bicycles arrive in Cape Town before or on the same flight as the customer, but this is not always possible due to the number of bicycles that need to be transported and the space restrictions per aircraft.

Packing procedures

To ensure that bicycles are delivered in perfect condition, customers should familiarise themselves with the following packing procedures:

  • The seat must be fully lowered;
  • Turn the handlebars parallel to the frame;
  • Leave the front wheel attached;
  • Remove or turn the pedals inwards;
  • Deflate the tyres (tyres inflated with nitrogen, will not be accepted for transport);
  • The bicycle must be placed in a bicycle bag or box, or wrapped in bubble wrap;
  • Bicycle inflation pumps filled with division 2.2 carbon dioxide non-flammable gas will be accepted for transportation as checked baggage only. The maximum amount per customer is limited to four 16 gram cartridges. Please declare this when checking in for a flight;
  • Remove speedometers and electronic equipment and carry this as hand luggage;
  • Spare wheels cannot be carried as hand luggage and need to be checked in as checked baggage. The standard checked baggage allowance will apply. Should an extra baggage fee need to be applied, customers can either pay R245 online or R350 at the airport. Go to ba.com or kulula.com for details regarding the baggage policies.
  • Spare wheels need to be packed properly before check in. At check in, the spare wheels will be tagged with a limited release tag.
