Riding the Absa Cape Epic for a good cause

The Absa Cape Epic kicked off on Saturday, 24 March 2012 and among the hundreds of entrants, Team Trojans 2 is riding for a commendable cause.

The two team members, Mike van Harmelen and Bevan Jeffery, have prepared to ride one of the most challenging mountain bike races in the world in order to raise funds for the purchase of wheelchairs or other mobility equipment for underprivileged, brain damaged people.

Changing peoples' lives

Named the Wheels4Wheels project, contestant Mike van Harmelen, marketing manager at Plascon says their bicycle wheels will bring hope to those with no wheels by giving them wheels of their own. "Many of these people have no medical aid and due to their circumstances cannot afford or even get access to a wheelchair. The Wheels4Wheels fundraising initiative will be supporting the Trojan's Trust. Through the Trojan's Trust we will be able to change the lives of people who are unable to socialise or simply move around their homes."

Team Trojans 2 has a variety of sponsors including Plascon which sponsored the team gear, as well as others such as Biogen, Powasol, Silverback, Expressive Photography and ConnectWeb.

The Absa Cape Epic takes place every year around the last week of March and the first week of April. The race is held over eight days and includes a time-trial prologue. The route changes every year, and in 2012 will lead aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world through approximately 781km of the unspoilt nature of the Western Cape and up approximately 16 800m of climbing over some of the most magnificent passes in South Africa.
