Vessel tender bidders under cloud

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has short-listed two companies bidding for the multimillion-rand contract to crew and maintain South Africa's fleet of fishing patrol and survey vessels, despite their facing separate investigations by state institutions.

The department said on Tuesday (6 August 2013) that since no conclusion has been reached yet, the two companies, Smit Amandla Marine - under investigation by the Hawks - and the Sekunjalo Consortium - under investigation by the public protector - have as good a chance as the other four companies.

The department has confirmed that the other four bidders are P&O Maritime, South African Vessel Management Services, Tswelopele Ship Management Consortium and Nautica SA.
