International Maritime Organisation

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is an agency specialising in the responsibility of the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships based in the United Nations.

The convention establishing the IMO was adopted in Geneva in 1948 and IMO first met in 1959. IMO's main task is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping and its remit includes safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.
