Deep-sea fishing vote delayed

Scheduled to occur in mid-October, the vote has been delayed on numerous occasions since March.

According to the news agency, the European Commission had proposed a stricter licensing system for deep-sea fishing in July last year, where licenses for vessels that used deep-sea fishing equipment such as bottom trawls and bottom-set gillnets would be phased out and the equipment would be banned two years after the regulation enters force.

But the deep-sea industry has complained, citing inaccurate impact assessments and claiming that the law would unfairly penalise certain fishing methods for no justifiable reason.

Deep sea fishing accounts for just one per cent of fishing in EU waters, mostly in Portuguese and Spanish waters, continued European Voice.

The vote has been rescheduled for November 4.
