"We believed that we needed a platform that is relevant to us, one that will allow us to be youthful yet empowered at the same time, open opportunities and allow us to dream and have our voices heard. That is the sole purpose Wayami.com was founded for," said Sbu Khoza and Kelly Kuyunsa (co-founders).

In South Africa there is a higher internet penetration than most African countries and even higher mobile access, especially amongst the youth. There is a flood of information available to people and a flood of technology applications that try to manage or make it easy for people to communicate and consume this information.

Access to information

The challenge facing most South Africans, especially the youth, is how to access relevant information that will be useful to them and turn that into productivity. Most of the applications (more than 95%) are applications built outside South Africa by companies that do not understand the dynamic challenges that are faced on a day-to-day basis by individual South Africans. 41% of South African youth are unemployed, 50% drop out of school, and 71% do not know where to go to look for financial support for business development.

Khoza and Kunyunsa have experienced the same hardships faced by many young people in trying to find a relevant platform that is open, where young people can share and communicate with other young people about their experiences, interests, and issues. The concept of a proudly South African, tailor-made, relevant and interesting social platform called Wayami (meaning 'a real friend') was conceived to empower people of South Africa, especially the youth.

Wayami.com is therefore a social networking platform that aims to encourage a culture of sharing relevant, interesting and empowering information that will inspire and influence change around and within communities. Noborox founders and Wayami developers, Khoza and Kuyunsa, expressed their gratitude to AfriGIS (Pty) Ltd for mentoring them and continuously guiding them through their journey. "It gives us hope that as we grow as a company and platform, we will be able to open doors for others to have a voice and hope for a better youthful life with many opportunities and especially have some fun on the way," concluded Khoza and Kunyunsa.
