AU calls for calm in Guinea
"Dlamini Zuma is closely following the situation in the Republic of Guinea. She is deeply concerned about recent political developments in the country that have degenerated into street clashes and violence, [which has seen] the loss of lives and destruction of property.
"She strongly urges all stakeholders to remain calm and engage in genuine dialogue on the way forward," said the AU in a statement.
Reports say the clashes are between security forces and protesters in the run-up to a divisive parliamentary election.
The elections due in May are meant to be the last step in Guinea's transition to civilian rule after two years under an army junta following the death of long-time leader Lansana Conte in 2008.
Dlamini Zuma has stressed the need for all political stakeholders to "redouble their efforts in devising an acceptable electoral framework" that will address the concerns of all political stakeholders and ensure peaceful and credible elections take place in the country.
"The chairperson of the commission pledges the AU's commitment to the Republic of Guinea, in line with its relevant instruments, to support the on-going democratic process," said the AU.
