    Cosatu calls for a national minimum wage

    The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) wants to scrap sectoral minimum wage negotiations and impose a national minimum wage throughout the country says Times Live, reporting on the release of the union's policy document shortly before the ANC policy conference began in Midrand.

    Times Live says experts are "flummoxed" by the move as it could increase unemployment levels, especially among the youth. It represents a major about-turn for the union that has, until now, insisted on sectoral wage negotiations.

    Experts have blasted the plan, saying it would make an inflexible labour market even more inflexible and force employers to pay more than they can afford, leading to a corresponding loss of jobs.
