New Waste Act considers lifecycle assessment

History may well show that the new National Environmental Management: Waste Act was one of the most significant laws ever brought onto the statute books of South Africa, says the Gunstons Attorneys director, Garth Watson, speaking to the SA Commercial Prop News.

"For the first time in South Africa," he says, "legislation recognises what environmentalists refer to as 'life cycle assessment' (LCA) - the process whereby the total potential long and short term environmental effects and impacts of a product or service are evaluated."

According to the SA Commercial Prop News Watson said that most people have no idea where or how products they purchase were made or from where the materials used in them are sourced.
